October 2013 – Banksy NYC

UK underground artist Banksy came to NYC recently and made the entire 5 boroughs his playground like canvas for the entire month of October. Highlights included a tribute to the victims of 911, a secret art sale to unsuspecting buyers in Central Park and a 24 art exhibit under the high-line which included a gas station turned into a sheep pasture. Sadly many of his pieces were painted over within hours or removed, but we stopped by a few of the impromptu works throughout month. The buzz and hype of having Banksy around for the month was great and he’s welcome in Gotham anytime as far as most of us in the city are concerned.

Pretty Lights 10/30 @ Roseland Ballroom, NYC

Pretty Lights recently hit NYC promoting his Grammy nominated album Color Map of the Sun at the Roseland Ballroom. Not exactly sure how to describe the show, other than young kids, neon colors, loud beats and Pretty Lights….lots of Lights.

Derrick Vincent Smith has come a long way since dropping out of the University of Denver 12 years ago and becoming Pretty Lights. His latest album cracked the US Top 30, despite being available as a free download! His sound is an analog version of hip hop and electronica.

10/25 – Robbie Pope & Sydney Blu @ Pink Elephant, NYC

Our friend and former In Bass We Trust spinner, Robbie Pope, invited us out to hear him play at the Pink Elephant in the village. The club, located near Washington Sq Park on 8th Street had a great vibe and a killer sound system. Robbie hosted the night along with international DJ Sydney Blu and the event was filled to capacity all night.

10/11 Kevin Focus @ X NightClub (Charlotte, NC)

In Bass We Trust headed back south recently to check out a brand new state of the art club. Event coordinator and national promoter based in Las Vegas, Derrick Braun, recently opened his own flashy, shiny, nouevou incarnation of a nightclub at the NC Music Factory in Charlotte, NC. ‘X’ as it’s known on the street. There is also an attached Asian tapas restaurant upstairs, 'Bamboo Sky' and ample v.i.p and private seating areas.

The club is located next to Charlotte’s Super-club ‘Label’, which on this night had played host to Dash Berlin. Not to be outdone in the big name DJ department, ‘X’ has already hosted the house Don himself Pete Tong. With Dash Berlin playing right next door at Label we naturally assumed the place would be near empty. Wrong, it actually was fairly packed and near capacity. Either they heard we were coming or the word is already out on this place!  The VIP was popping, dance floor full of southern girls dancing, the bartenders were fast and well…so refreshing coming from NYC.

The club is located where Denny Hamlin’s nightclub endeavor ‘Butter’ formerly held court, but the entrance is now in the rear and the DJ booth is….well, a protruding geometric sculpture 10 feet up the wall with a barrage of visuals. The sound system was impressive with the brand new, shiny red ceramic components. Void Audio is responsible for the audio installation and it is magnificent. Having no idea who was playing, we were pleasantly surprised to see ‘Kostas X’ laying some deep house down outside. Meanwhile, Ken Focus was above the crowd bombing down upon the patrons an assault of brand new electro and house bombs.

We highly recommend you check this place out. Top notch venue!

10/4 - Industry Standard @ Kolo Club, Hoboken, NJ

While the biggest Oktoberfest in all of NJ was going on in the beer garden at Hoboken’s Pilsner House, the house crew from ‘Industry Standard’ were throwing down up stairs. The night was filled with good house beats, lasers and Lego like visuals behind the DJ booth (thanks to the projectors aimed onto window shutters!). The dance floor was packed all night and while many folks were there for Oktoberfest and didn't even know there was a wild dance party in the building, anyone that found the side stairs to the event never made it back down the stairs. The ‘Industry Standard’ event has been going monthly on Fridays for quite a while and has a full stable of top notch dance floor moving talent as monthly residents. The event founder, Marcus Robinson, moved his talents from jolly old England several years back and has been throwing underground parties to the delights on US soils ever since. Marcus closed the night, blowing the roof off the Kolo Club. Prior to that, DJ's included James Tobin, Dan Rozum, Plainboy Christopher Terruson andAndy Bullock. Next party 'Industry Standard' is Friday November 1 and if you like house music you need to be there.
