Not just another Friday in the apple. This one had house music. Proper house music.
With thanks to our friends over at Biohazard promotions, In Bass We Trust hit Pacha NYC to see Denis Ferrer. Pacha NYC is in a league of it’s own. Nestled on the far west side of 46th in Hells Kitchen the lines out the door are often as long as the nights inside the iconic red cherry ornamented building. As for Pacha's sound, the system is one of the best. It’s a fine tuned beast of an animal. About half a dozen Spanish dancers are on display at most times in the night and one is even dancing in a shower on the entry level. While the drinks are expensive, the bartenders serving them are actually fast and cherubic, something many nightclubs seem to pass over without a thought on.
The night built at a slow and pleasant pace as Nasser Baker spun a mix of techno, tech house and some deep house. Tracks played included: Enemy (&Me & Rampa), Empire State (&Me), Palm Leaves (Gerd-Deetron Mix), Older House (Sidney Charles). Dennis dropped Nasser’s massive track ‘Tricks’ late in the night and it went off hardcore.
Dennis had been grooving in the booth for a little while checking the vibe and at 1:30, he dropped the needle on a Deetron mix of his own and the building slamed the pedal down and stayed in overdrive the rest of the evening. The fabulous producer and dj in his own right known as ‘Mr. V’ would occasionally get on the mic to hype the crowd with soulful words of wisdom ("if they tell you it's easy, they are lying.") on stage left as Nasser stayed at stage right all nightlong dancing and clearly loving his night until he would eventually go back onto play a closing set to the a crowd literally drenched in sweat for many hours at 5a.m. As for Dennis’s set, like those we’ve seen prior in Miami, it was flawless and amazing. Almost 4 hours of awesome. The set climaxed with Dennis’s upcoming Defected Records release ‘Mind UR Step’, for which he teamed up with Chicago chartreuse Janelle Kroll. This one is going to be huge. Other set highlights included Reverse Skydiving and Tricks (Nasser Baker)
Our only gripe we have as the golden sun begins to rise is the same gripe we have after seeing any good long and proper house music set…..why can’t the rest of the world’s token DJ’s quit playing such crap? Clearly there is some great music out there. At least in NYC the people are ready to dance to it when it is served to them. And that is definitely what was on the menu at Pacha last night. Huge servings of proper house music. Soul lifting house music. Body moving house music. Booty shaking house music. The kind of house music that makes you want to go home to bed at 4 a.m. but stay way past the dawn kind of house music. House music that leaves your legs tired and clothes soaked in sweat house music. The kind of house music that is now because it always was. Real house music. Denis Ferrer kind of house music.
