SOUP @ Cielo, NYC 9/6/13

We’ve been following the folks over at SOUP (Support Our Underground Properly) for a while now. It’s hard not to notice SOUP if you go out in NYC many times. They’ve been at it since the mid 90’s. The parties are the manifestation of DJ Chris Love’s love of house. He recently teamed promotionaly with DJ AB Logic (walla ‘DJ duo Love & Logic’) and it seems nearly every week they can be found throwing another gargantuan, often underground and always housey, dance music event. This past summer they’ve earned a recurring residency at Sullivan Room, hosted exclusive parties in the top night clubs of Manhattan brandishing big name DJ’s as well as a great many top local and regional DJ’s. They were found rocking dives practically under the Brooklyn Bridge for 12+ hours. They were spotted casting off on packed yacht parties in the Hudson before docking to all night after after-parties. Basically, SOUP has been at it for a long long long time and are essential mainstays in NYC. In an inbox flooded with event invites daily from around the globe, few promoters invites are even glanced at these days; we not only glance at, but we usually even read the ones they send. Recent SOUP DJ’s include Derrick Carter, Doc Martin, Todd Terry, Frankie Bones, Joeski, Francois K, Derrick May, DJ Pierre, Frankie Knuckles, Mr. V, Christian Martin…..yeah that kind of party, so go find it.

On a perfect late-summer Friday in September, we headed off to Cielo for SOUP’s latest blowout. ‘House Spinners’, with DJ Mus and Blaq Jeff (Astoria DJ Group legend and recent alumnus from “In Bass We Trust Miami Beach WMC 2013”) opened the night and had huge fan turnout and support for the amazing opening set he laid down. If only all DJ’s knew how to open a party like that. The entire cast of ADG DJ’s and friends were out to support the House Spinners and the building was packed and grooving hard by the time they left the decks.

‘The Wig’ came on next and played a long proper set of house music, while he danced and drummed live with l.e.d. tipped drum sticks. Local saxophonist Leah Gough-Cooper stepped up and laid down a surprise performance during ‘Mark Knight’s Man with a Red Face’. Chris Patrick laid some beats and finally ‘Love & Logic’ graced the stage to finish off the sweaty and packed crowd until next time.

9/02 | Erick Morillo | Studio Square - Astoria, NYC

Labor Day weekend was marred in the dance music community when Electric Zoo NYC had to close down the final day of the huge Randall's Island event due to several drug related deaths. The closure meant the town was now filled with legions of global music chasing punters with no plans or set destination and looking for shows. They hit New York City in their neon garb ready to party. All the clubs and events were guaranteed packed to overflow on Sunday night after the shutdown, especially the infamous Paradise Garage party with Joey Llanos.

The main remaining event to close the weekend fell to Erick Morillo on Monday. The Colombian-American Subliminal Records owner (based in Weehawken) interntional DJ and hit music producer is so local to the NYC area as to have had a portion of Bergainline Ave. in Union City, NJ renamed in 2012 to ‘Morillo Way’. Tonight he played in Astoria at Studio Square and there was no way we’d miss it. Potential rainstorms in the area meant that the event was moved from the outdoor courtyard to upstairs in the main event room. We can’t say were overly impressed with the bass heavy sound system in the untreated concrete echo chamber of an event space, but the sounds coming out of Erick's mixer were certainly top notch all night. Because the event was on a Monday, Erick came on early and we were quite thankful for that! Around 10 pm, Erick began dropping an acapella of ‘Love is the Message/It’s All About House Music/The Underground’ and the crowd who had been partying by as early as 4 pm packed the dance floor. He obviousluy loves Breach's summer hit, playing the original mix fully twice in an hour! He dropped his smash hit under the Reel to Reel Moniker before closing his set with his strongest offerings, Jungle Blood sandwiched between two songs starting with 'I Wanna'. The crowd danced fiercely to the Cube Guy mix of I Wanna Dance with Somebody and Erick closed with the '13 Ibiza smash by Santiago, 'I Wanna Feel'.

8/22 - In Bass We Trust Party @ Room 84, Hoboken, NJ

After successful parties at the Catalina Hotel on Miami Beach during WMC, several shows at Crown Station and Volume Lounge in Charlotte, NC, Room 84 in Hoboken, NJ is the latest club along the east coast to host the now infamous ‘In Bass We Trust’ party in 2013. The event space is simply amazing, filled with wall to wall television screens displaying custom visuals for the night, ample private v.i.p. seating, a huge dance floor, a lengthy bar and blasts beats out a stellar sound system (extra reinforced for the event!). We’re hoping for many more shows at Room 84. The events founder, Dante DiMedici, recently relocated 600 miles north to the tiny ‘Mile Square’ city and childhood home of Frank Sinatra nestled across the Hudson and in the shadow of NYC’s bright lights and skyscrapers.

Once again ‘cover free’ at Room 84 with $3 Bud Lights on tap. Mitch Craven opened the night with some high-energy electro house before local talent Bori stepped up to rock the speakers for an extended set. Robbie Pope stopped in before jetting to his next gig at the Sky Room, DJ SURV played a long flawless house set and DJ Tur3o closed the night out strong. DJ Tur3o was also celebrating his 100^th weekly release of his ‘Friday Night Dance Party’ on Z108internet.com. every Friday at 10 PM. ‘In Bass We Trust Radio Show’ is also on the station on Sunday nights at 8 PM. Tune in!

Look for the ‘In Bass We Trust’ event mostly monthly with the next event planned for September 26^th and once again at Room 84. Next month’s line up will include more of the areas finest house music spinners: DiMedici (Sound Council), Ralph Monte, Nasty Nick (ADG Group) and Rocketpants. Besides all over Hoboken and the internet, the events have been promoted by Hoboken 411, the definitive website for news and events for the city.

Marquee NYC Fridays / Dance, Love, House 7/12/2013

After missing Cher at Marquee earlier in the week, we at 'In Bass We Trust' were quite thrilled to head into the Meat-Packing district last night to visit our old friends at Marquee NYC Nightclub and new friends from “Dance, Love, House” and to check out the amazing redeux for Marquee NYC. Walker and Royce were behind the decks for the night and it was straight out pounding tech bliss all night long.

What a marked difference in the new layout at the venue since we last visited in early 2012. Outside the place looks much the same. Same friendly bouncers (if you are on the list!), same long lines of people trying to get in, same building façade. But whoah to the inside! A new platform VIP area was built, along with a new second floor bar, and it now towers over the dance floor. The large mirror ball looms above the dance floor and at one point was lowered low over the heads of patrons whilst being shot with lasers and doused with smoke machines making for quite an ambiance.

As for what to expect from DJ's at Marquee NYC 2.0: Total sound reversal from Marquee 1.0. Historically when we had visited, the DJ's were playing mostly hip-hop, top-40 remix, dance hall and open format stylings in the main room. That sound has gone out the back door. Also out the back door (sadly) was the back room, where some DJ’s played house music. Not to fret 'In Bass We Trust' readers, the house groove was moved straight in the front door to the main room and the sound system was improved and….well the place is amazing. Better music, nicer venue, friendlier crowd.....did I say much better music? Much. Beer prices had gone up, but luckily they were on sale this night and only $13 a bottle.

Great night. Everything we wanted Marquee to be in 2011/2012 it now apparently is as of today. And then some. NYC in general has really caught on to dance music throughout 1212 and it is a beautiful thing. Definitely recommended to stop out on Friday nights at Marquee.
